As July comes to a close and we enter the last month of summer, I’m excited to share a full lineup of city news, community events, major service updates, and opportunities for your input. This week’s highlights include safer neighborhood speeds, transit expansion, new green space planning, and some great local events.

πŸŽ‰ CARES Program Reaches 10,000 Responses

This week, the City’s CARES program (Community Alternative Response Emergency Services) hit a remarkable milestone 10,000 calls for service since launching! CARES provides mobile mental health crisis support without police involvement, offering residents a more compassionate, health-centered emergency response option.

Congratulations to the Madison Fire Department and all CARES team members for your continued commitment to our community!


🚍 Metro Transit Service Changes – Effective August 17

βœ… New Route D2 Service to Verona

Metro Transit is extending Route D2 beyond Maple Grove & McKee to downtown Verona and Epic Systems beginning August 17. Service will run:

  • Every 30 minutes on weekdays
  • Every 60 minutes nights & weekends
  • Paratransit coverage extended to Verona

The Transportation Commission will consider a realignment proposal for University Avenue and nearby rail crossings to improve pedestrian safety and long-term infrastructure.

🚦 20 is Plenty Program Officially Launched

The 20 is Plenty program was officially launched last week, marking a major step forward in neighborhood safety. This initiative lowers speed limits to 20 mph in residential areas as part of Madison’s Vision Zero strategy to eliminate traffic fatalities.

Public Information Meetings (PIMs)

  • Public Input Meeting - Midtown Commons Park, Tuesday, July 29The community is invited to a virtual public meeting to help guide the future of Midtown Commons Park, located at 1310 Waldorf Blvd. Midtown Commons Park is expanding to include ~8.2 acres of additional park green space. Community members are invited to review existing park uses and provide their thoughts on desired park amenities in the expansion area.
  • Public Input Meeting - Kenneth Newville Park, Thursday, July 31Newville Park neighbors are invited to the park for a community input meeting on Thursday, July 31, starting at 6:00pm. Parks staff will be sharing potential amenities and layout options for a new development plan for Kenneth Newville Park. We’re seeking community feedback to help prioritize features and ensure the plan reflects local needs and preferences.
