Employee Self Service (ESS)
Log in to ESS
- Username: Your Employee ID number. You can find this in the upper left corner of your paystub.
- Password: If you have not logged in before, your password will be the last four numbers of your Social Security Number. When you log in, you will be prompted to change your password.
If you are locked out of your account, you can reset your password or contact the IT Help Desk at 608-266-4193.
If you do not have access to a computer, smartphone, or internet at home, you can use a computer for free at Madison Public Library locations. A computer may also be available at your City work site – please ask your supervisor or Payroll Clerk.
Open Enrollment
During the annual Open Enrollment period in the fall, City employees can make changes Dental, Vision insurance, and Flex Spending through ESS.
We recommend you try logging in to ESS ahead of time to make sure you will be able to make changes more easily during Open Enrollment.
Download the Mobile App
ESS has a free mobile app in the Apple and Android app stores.
- Download the app. To find it, search for Munis ESS Mobile.
- The app will ask you to enter a Web Service URL. Enter: https://ess.cityofmadison.com
- Log in with your Employee ID number and ESS password.
Not all ESS features are available in the app. Click "View Full Site" from the Home screen to access other features in your web browser.
