Public Sidewalk Snow Clearing Update
Good morning,
The snowfall that began on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m. ended this morning around 6:00 a.m. Forecasts indicate there may be additional snowfall this afternoon and tonight (ending at around 8:00pm).
However, the earliest due date to remove snow accumulation from yesterday and today would be tomorrow, Thursday, January 22, by noon (12:00 p.m.). As a reminder, the deadline to clear public sidewalks is 12:00 p.m. (noon) on the day following the end of the snowfall. Please stay tuned for any updates of the change of the deadline.
Snowfall from this event is light and powdery. Prompt snow removal is always in your best interest, especially as an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from later Thursday into Saturday. Keeping public sidewalks free of snow and ice is essential to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.
Please also consider assisting neighbors who may have difficulty removing accumulated snow. Even small efforts can make a significant difference in keeping our community safe and accessible. Clearing sidewalks in stages may help prevent excessive accumulation and make final removal easier.
Finally, please remember that all public sidewalks, including curb ramps where applicable, must be kept free of snow and ice regardless of the source of accumulation. If ice remains that cannot be fully removed, please apply sand or another appropriate traction material.
Free sand for residents is available at several locations around Madison to keep sidewalks safe.
