Reindahl (Amund) Park History
This 91-acre park was once the farmland of Amund K. Reindahl (1869-1946) who bequeathed the property to the Town of Burke in 1946 “to be perpetually reserved and maintained for park purposes." The son of Norwegian immigrants, Reindahl was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and served two terms as Dane County register of deeds (1899-1903).
A historical marker at the park, sponsored by Town and Country Garden Club, Madison (1967) reads:
The land for this park, with the triangular retreat across Highway 151 and Sunnyside School nearby, was given by Amund K. Reindahl (1869-1946) farmer-owner. A University of Wisconsin graduate and Dane County Register of Deeds, Reindahl bought the farm in 1901.
Inspired by love for children and interest in nature and people, Reindahl bequeathed 10 acres to the school and 90 acres for park purposes.
The historic Britton Inn, stagecoach and travel stop between Madison and Milwaukee, established in 1856, stood on this site.
