Southwest Area Plan

Art Workshpop Flyer

Art Workshop

Artists and creatives are invited to take part in the Southwest Area Plan Art Workshop on Wednesday, July 23, from 6 to 7 PM at the Meadowood Neighborhood Center. This session will gather feedback from local artists, designers, and art enthusiasts. The workshop will provide space and materials for attendees to share their ideas and concerns about the area. Results will inform the Southwest Area Plan through a visual and expressive lens.

Updated Phase 1 Feedback Available

An updated Phase 1 feedback summary and complete comment chart is available. TThe update includes previous comments, plus new comments received through the end of Phase 1 of the project in May. New feedback sources include emails, additional public events, and the interactive commenting map. We also partnered with the nINA Collective to conduct a series of focus groups to better connect with, and get thoughts and feedback from, residents who tend to be underrepresented in more "traditional" methods of planning engagement. The focus groups summary report is also available for review.

Southwest Area Plan Storymap

A "storymap" is available  ffor the Southwest Area Plan. It walks through what Area Plans are, why the City undertakes plans, and highlights Area Plan topics.

Madison Madness!!!

Thanks to everyone who participated in Madison Madness 2025. Nearly 1,400 people participated and shared their thoughts about community needs and future growth in Madison. The activity helps us understand what the community cares about by creating choices between positive elements of future growth. However, each element is important and will likely be  included in future plans.

The Southwest Area Plan Process

Area Plans help guide how the physical parts of our community change over time. This includes things like land use, housing, transit, streets, and bike paths. Area Plans are steered by overarching City policies and feedback from the community.

The Southwest Area is generally bounded by the West Beltline Highway to the north, the City of Fitchburg to the east, and S. High Point Road to the west. See map below. Additional background maps can be found under the Project Resources section.

The City invites everyone to share feedback about the future of their neighborhoods. Keep up to date on events and ways to participate by subscribing to the email list.

About the Planning Framework

The City has established a Planning Framework tomake planning for different parts of the city simpler and more equitable. Over the next decade, 12 Area Plans will be developed to cover the entire city and future growth areas. Each plan will address a consistent set of topics.  After all 12 Area Plans are established, we will update them each decade to keep up with changes over time.
