Safe Routes to School
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programming focus on helping kids and their families walk, bike and roll to and from school. The City, in collaboration with partners such as the Wisconsin Bike Fed and the Madison Metropolitan School District, focuses on education, encouragement, engagement and infrastructure improvements, to increase safety & accessibility, encourage physical activity and make walking, biking and rolling to school fun. These efforts are coordinated by the School Traffic Safety Team.
SRTS Programs and Events
The City's SRTS program has a variety of components to holistically address the safety of children walking and bicycling to school, some of which are highlighted below.
- School Traffic Safety Team – The School Traffic Safety Team brings together staff from the City, Madison Metropolitan School District, and the Wisconsin Bike Fed to improve the safety of children traveling to and from school.
- Events – Each year the City and schools hold events to encourage families to walk and bike to school.
- Walk & Bike Education – City staff support education throughout the school year and during the summer to help youth build the necessary skills to walk and bike confidently.
- Safe Routes to School Plan – Find out more about the work beginning in 2024 to develop an updated Plan that will guide Madison forward in
- Crossing Guard Program – Madison's School Crossing Guard Program is integral in supporting active transportation to and from our elementary schools. The primary role of a Crossing Guard is to guide children safely across the street but they also remind drivers that they are in a school zone and are valuable members of the city and school community. Use this map to find the location of crossing guards in your area!
SRTS Strategic Plan
The City of Madison, the Madison Metropolitan School District, and the Wisconsin Bike Fed began collaborating on a Safe Routes to School Strategic Plan in 2025. The SRTS Strategic Plan provides a vision for walking, biking, and rolling to school in Madison and policy and programmatic recommendations to achieve that vision.
The final draft SRTS Plan is undergoing internal review and will be posted here soon. The plan is expected to be adopted by the Madison Common Council in Fall 2026.
SRTS School Plans
The City developed school-specific SRTS Plans for 27 MMSD schools in 2025 and 2026 using a Federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant and a Wisconsin Department of Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant. The plans provide a brief overview of existing infrastructure conditions in areas surrounding each school, and provide recommendations for the City, school staff, and MMSD to implement in order to improve walking and bicycling conditions to each school.
Individual plans are linked below. SRTS Plans for the remaining MMSD schools will be developed as staff time allows and will be linked below when they are available.
