Week of June 22nd
postedDear District 16 Neighbors
This week is going to be a busy one, with several important Public Information Meetings, committee meetings, and agenda items coming before the council on Tuesday for final adoption.
The second Budget Engagement session will be on Wednesday June 24th from 6:00-8:00pm at the Warner Park Community Center. This budget engagement session will focus on Planning and Transportation. Note: the budget engagement session on Public Facilities and Services was rescheduled to July 16th due to severe weather.
Following recent storms, the city has added additional brush pick up. You can find the next brush pick up dates for your neighborhood here. You can also take brush to one of the several drop off sites across the city, which you can find here. Note that yard waste and brush are different and have different pick up schedules.
Finally, the city has updated requirements for large item pick up. You must now schedule a pick up time for large items left on curbs. Certain items do have fees for pick up – you can find a list of specific items with fees here. As of January 1st 2025, the City of Madison will not provide large item pick up for multi-family properties with 8 units or more.
Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance! As always, I'm eager to hear from you.

Southeast Area Plan
The Southeast Area Plan is coming before the common council for final adoption on Tuesday, June 23rd. This is the culmination of years of work by residents, business leaders, community organizations, and city staff. This document will serve as a guide for shaping the future of our neighborhoods in Southeast Madison over the next decade.
There has been significant public input, including hundreds of comments left on the interactive feedback map, participation in the “Shaping the Future of the Southeast Bracket", several public information meetings, a District 16 community conversation at Fire Station 14, a business walk, and regular vetting and updates to the relevant Boards, Committees, and Commissions.
Recommendations in District 16:
- An update to the Generalized Future Land Use (GFLU) map at the intersection of E. Buckeye Rd. and Vondron to allow for community mixed use.
- Expand Transit Oriented Development (TOD) overlays at nodes and/or along S Stoughton Road between Buckeye and Pflaum Roads and implement the mixed-use Generalized Future Land Use alternative if WisDOT chooses the wide urban boulevard alternative.
- Study the potential for traffic calming measures in the Secret Places and Lost Creek Neighborhoods, especially at pedestrian crossings near Marsh and Siggelkow Roads.
- A recommendation for more bus shelters and other amenities at bus stops across the district.
- A recommendation that WisDOT accept the wide boulevard option for the re-design of US 51 (S. Stoughton Rd.) and enhance pedestrian safety, as well as changes to GFLU map should WisDOT pick that option.
Updates to the sidewalk and path network. As well as some proposed new streets near Secret Places and updates to the GFLU.
Planned Development Zoning PMI's
This week, there will be two public information meetings on the upcoming zoning changes to Planned Development (PD) Zoning. Houses who will be affected should have received a postcard with information about these meetings. There are two main neighborhoods in District 16 that will be affected by these changes: Reston Heights & Lost Creek.

You can check to see if your property is in a PD zone or conventional zoning district by using the Assessor's Office's Property Lookup tool. The tool will list the zoning district of a property under the “Property Information" section.
A list of properties to be rezoned and what their proposed conventional zoning districts will be is available online. Residents whose property is currently in a PD can refer to the full list, which is sorted alphabetically by street name, or the webpage for this project to find their proposed new zoning designation. In determining these proposed changes, zoning staff worked to select conventional zoning districts that, as much as possible, match the required setbacks and lot sizes in the PD and are consistent with the existing built condition of buildings.
You can learn more about the benefits of rezoning from a PD to a conventional zoning district on the City of Madison's web page.
Dog Regulations In Madison
As summer continues, I have started to hear more concerns about the rules surrounding dogs in the city.
All City of Madison residents owning a dog or cat that is 5 months of age or older must have their pet licensed. The license year is January 1 through December 31. Licenses are $25.00 for Spayed or Neutered animals and $36.00 for Unspayed or Unneutered. You can apply for a dog license here.
Dogs are welcome in neighborhood, community, and mini parks in Madison. However, they must remain on leashes at all times. Owners must clean up after their pets and have their license with them. Violations may result in fines listed in MGO 23.32.
Dogs are not permitted in a handful of locations in our parks, including shelters, conservation parks, and sporting fields. You can find a full list of prohibited locations here.
Madison also offers nine off leash dog parks: Brittingham, Demetral, McCormick Park, North Star Park, Odana School Park, Quann Park, Sycamore Park, Walnut Grove, and Warner Park. You can learn more about our off leash dog parks, their rules, and regulations here.
