EV Charging
To help meet the City of Madison's sustainability goals the Fleet Division is transitioning to fully electric vehicles for City operations whenever possible. In partnership with the Fleet Division, the Engineering Division installs and maintains electric vehicle charging stations to ensure that the electric vehicles in the City's fleet can be reliably and efficiently charged. Through 2025 there have been eighty-nine electric vehicle chargers installed across twenty-two City facilities. The majority of the electric vehicle chargers are classified as level 2 chargers which can provide approximately twenty-five miles of driving range per hour of charging for the City's passenger and light commercial vehicles. Two of the installed chargers are level 3 DC fast chargers which can provide up to two hundred miles of driving range per hour of charging for smaller vehicles. The level 3 chargers are primarily used for the City's heavy duty electric vehicles: Two Mack refuse collection trucks (at Street's Sycamore Facility) and the Pierce Volterra Electric Fire Truck (at MFD Station 08).
The Engineering Division utilizes an EV charger management software system to track energy usage, schedule charge times, and manage access control for the chargers. The Engineering Division is also involved with upgrading the electrical systems at City building to provide more capacity for Electrical vehicle chargers. Similarly, new City buildings are designed with consideration for electric vehicle charging with both capacity for future chargers and space for efficient charging of electric vehicles. The electric vehicle chargers for Metro's electric buses are not installed or managed by the Engineering Division.
