Riding During Extreme Weather
Keep the following in mind when traveling during extreme weather.
-
Safety First
Your safety is our top priority during severe weather. Service will continue as scheduled unless conditions become unsafe. Because storms can develop quickly with little warning, please be prepared to act promptly and move to a safe location when directed by a Metro Transit driver.

Expect Possible Delays
Drivers maintain schedules as conditions allow, but during severe weather, buses may be delayed or temporarily stopped for safety. Buses are likely to fall behind schedule during these periods.
Metro recommends riding only when absolutely necessary, or taking an earlier trip and planning extra time for the commute to ensure you arrive on time at your destination. Be assured that your driver is doing everything possible to stay on schedule while maintaining safety. -
What to Expect During a Weather Emergency
Severe thunderstorms or Tornadoes can pose a serious risk to passengers while riding Metro Transit. If conditions become unsafe, Metro dispatch will notify the driver to pull over and seek shelter pending on their location.
Passenger Safety Guidance:
- Follow the driver's instructions calmly and quickly.
- Exit the bus and move to a safe shelter location.
- Stay away from windows and open areas.
- Assist others if needed, especially those who may require extra help.
- Remain in shelter until it is safe to return.
- Service will resume once it is safe to do so.
- Drivers will assess conditions before continuing their route.
- Delays may occur due to road conditions, debris, or other hazards.
-
Flooding
Move to higher ground right away and avoid walking through floodwaters. Stay clear of storm drains and fast-moving streams. If your bus stop is flooded, use our Bus Tracker to find the nearest safe stop outside the affected area.
During flooding, buses may be rerouted to avoid high-risk areas. For the latest updates, visit our detour page, sign up for Metro's Service Alerts, and follow us on social media. Report Flooding & Damage (City of Madison)
