City Meetings

The Common Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 25, at 6:30 p.m. in virtual format. Agenda items include:

  •  Item 1: An honoring resolution recognizing November as Homelessness Awareness Month.
  • Item 2: An honoring resolution recognizing November 20th, 2025 to be Transgender Day of Remembrance.
  • Item 10: A proposal creating new ordinances to regulate the sale of hemp-derived THC products (I’m a cosponsor). From the drafter’s analysis: “The purpose of this ordinance is to restrict the sales of hemp-derived cannabinoid products to those under the age of 21. The State of Wisconsin adopted the hemp exemptions contained in the 2018 Federal Farm Bill, which contained loopholes allowing for an unregulated market in the sale of psychoactive substances. The state legislature has not taken action to close the loopholes related to the sale of psychoactive substances or to regulate their sale. The City of Madison has seen a proliferation of unregulated businesses selling a variety of these substances and finds it necessary to restrict their sales in order to safeguard those under the age of 21 from these unregulated intoxicating products.”
  • Item 11: A proposal creating new ordinances to regulate the sale of pets in retail pet stores. This ordinance bans the sale of cats or dogs in retail pet stores, in favor of adoptions. Note that no known pet stores in Madison currently sell cats or dogs, opting instead for the adoption model through partners like the Humane Society or Madison Cat Project. Alders have received a lot of emails about this one, nearly all in favor. I'll admit that I’m a bit perplexed at the amount of attention this has received given that it won’t actually make any known changes to how existing pet stores and agencies currently operate in Madison. I'm also interested in limiting business opportunities for "puppy mills" and plan to vote for this one.

  • Item 14: A resolution declaring Public Right of Way to extend Driscoll Drive through a portion of City-owned land to connect to the future Ethos Lane (I’m the sponsor). Here’s a map showing where this is.
  • Item 37: A resolution authorizing the Fire Department to purchase an off-road ambulance vehicle (I’m the sponsor).
  • Item 45: MPD’s 3rd Quarter Report from Chief John Patterson. Here’s a link to the report.
  • Item 54: A resolution authorizing Common Council members to participate in private fundraising efforts for funds to support operating new Bertillon homeless shelter under the direction of the new Shelter Friends group (I’m a cosponsor).
