The Mayor signed the 2017 Capital Improvement & Operating  budgets passed by the Council. 

The budget was cited as the largest budget in the city's history: $300M for operations and $360M for capital improvements. Highlights in this year's budget:

  • Midtown Police Station 
  • Madison Municipal Bldg Renovation
  • Public Market
  • Pinney Library
  • Major Road Repairs & Construction Projects
  • Madison City Employees received a 2% raise.
  • $400,000 allocated in efforts to reduce youth violence and provide programs to support prison re-entry.

Budget impact: increase in tax rate of 3.55%. Approximately $70 annual increase in property taxes on average  $200,000 home. For more details on budget go to Madison City website - 2017 Budget.

Tuesday, November 22, 2016: Madison Common Council Meeting Highlights

The Madison Common Council is the policy-making body of the City of Madison. Representing the citizens of the City of Madison, the Common Council will promote the safety, health and general well being of our community within the bounds of fiscal responsibility while preserving and advancing the quality of life resulting in exceptional civic pride.

Meetings are live the first and third Tuesdays of each month. They are held at the City-County Building, Room 210. Be sure to watch District Reports before each meeting to get the inside scoop on Council issues.

Watch Madison Common Council Tuesdays at 6:30pm, Thursdays at 8:30am, Fridays at 12:30pm


443304  Honoring Resolution: Commending the Madison City Clerk's Office, the Madison Public Library System, Streets Division and countless others for their outstanding efforts during the 2016 General Election. 

44910 Substitute Resolution: Authorizing the City to execute an operating agreement with  the Madison Ultimate Frisbee Association, Inc. (MUFA) for the 2016-2020 seasons for the use of certain athletic fields in City parks. 

Priority field locations include:

  1. Burr Jones – Fields #1 & #2
  2. Glacier Hill - Fields #3 & #4
  3. Manchester - Fields #1, #2, #3 & #4
  4. Midtown Commons – Fields #1, #2, #3 & #4
  5. Northstar – Field #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 & #6

MUFA is a non-profit entity.

Monday, November 21, 2016: CCOC Subcommittee on Police & Community Relations Meeting


This body makes recommendations to the Council on short-term policy changes for the MPD while waiting for results of the MPD Policy & Procedure Review Ad Hoc Committee study.

A primary goal of Imagine Madison is to reach, listen to, and record the ideas of a broad and diverse cross section of the public, on topics including housing, transportation, racial equity, sustainability and others.

Imagine Madison coincides with an update of the City's Comprehensive Plan--a strategy document that lays out the vision for the community for decades to come. Significantly, the Comprehensive Plan is updated only once every decade.

Television Recycling Fee Changes Starting January 1, 2017

Effective January 1, 2017, the Streets Division will increase the cost of recycling a television from $10 to $15 apiece. City of Madison residents and taxpayers are still required to bring televisions to one of the Streets Division drop-off sites for the City to recycle it.  Residents are reminded that they should not place televisions at the curb, or into their curbside collection carts.

The Streets Division drop-off sites are located at 1501 W. Badger Rd. and 4602 Sycamore Ave.  

The recycling fee is paid by obtaining an appliance sticker in advance of delivering the item to a drop-off site.  

Stickers are can be purchased at any city of Madison public library, the Treasurer's Office in the City-County Building, at either Streets Division office, or online at (go to the Appliance Disposal Sticker under Streets & Recycling). 

Madison Municipal Building Access

Starting November 19, 2016, all City agencies and tenants will be vacated from the Madison Municipal Building in order to complete the MMB Renovation.  The MMB will be closed with the exception of evening public meetings, and for those staff who have electronic card access.  After November 30, 2016, the MMB will be closed to staff and public until completion of the MMB Renovation, scheduled to reopen in October 2018. 

The alternate locations of the MMB agencies during the renovation are per the lists below.

Refuse & Recycling Collection Schedule for the Thanksgiving Holiday

There will be no refuse and recycling collection on both Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. 

On Wednesday, November 23, the Streets Division will collect refuse and recycling from those who have a regularly scheduled Wednesday and Thursday collection.

On Monday, November 28, the Streets Division will collect refuse and recycling from those who have a regularly scheduled Friday and Monday collection.
