Event Highlights for the Week of April 5, 2021

April 2, 2021 4:07 PM

Events, activities, seminars, etc.

  • Public Health Madison & Dane County will be hosting a virtual town hall on COVID-19 vaccines on Thursday, April 8, at 6pm. Public health experts will address common concerns related to differences among vaccine efficacy and provide an update about the vaccine distribution process in Dane County.  The event is free and everyone is encouraged to attend. The event will be held on Zoom and participants can register here to receive the Zoom link to attend. The event will be limited to 500 people on a first come, first served basis.

Announcements, press releases, press conferences, etc.

  • Expanded Street Division drop-off site hours begin on April 5, 2021.  Read more here.
  • The City of Madison Clerk's Office has had to move many polling places since the February Spring Primary and the November General Election. You are encouraged to check whether your polling place has changed if you plan to vote on Tuesday, April 6.  More information and a list of polling place can be found here.
  • The indoor mask requirement remains in place, Public Health Order #15 has been released, and the phased reopening in Dane County continues.  Read more here.
  • Madison Public Library Board delays decision to expand in-person library service until their May 6 Board meeting.  Read more here.
  • On March 29, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) extended the federal eviction moratorium, which was set to expire on March 31. The moratorium will remain in effect through June 30, 2021.  The latest order specifies that individuals who have already submitted a signed declaration are not required to submit a new declaration.  It also modifies and clarifies language around applicability of the moratorium.  The White House coupled the announcement with a fact sheet on how the Biden-Harris Administration continues to support renters and landlords during the coronavirus pandemic.  Namely, the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (P.L.117-2) provides additional funding for jurisdictions to administer the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), locally known as Dane CORE.
  • On April 1, Public Health Madison & Dane County and the Madison Police Department issued a public health alert due to an unexpected increase in drug-involved overdoses in Dane County. During the preceding 24 hours, at least four people experienced an overdose.  The alert was to increase community awareness and advise first responders, healthcare professionals, and people who use drugs and their families of the increased risk for overdose in our community.  Currently, it is unknown as to what was driving this recent change in activity. It is possible that the mixture of illicit street drugs in our community changed. Often strong opioids are unknowingly added into the illicit drug supply.  More information, including resources, can be found here.
  • Calling all inclusive workplace instructional designers! Help the City of Madison design training to build a more inclusive workplace! See the Request for Proposals here.

Save the Date

  • Madison Public Library, the Wisconsin Book Festival and the All of Us Research Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are joining forces to present a virtual author event series focused on a range of community health issues.  On Tuesday, April 27, at 7 pm author Angela Garbes and her book, Like A Mother: A Feminist Journey through the Science and Culture of Pregnancy, will be featured.  In Like A Mother, Garbes provides a rigorously researched and compelling look at the physiology, biology and psychology of pregnancy and motherhood, informed by in-depth reportage and personal experience.  Register to attend Like A Mother:
