Heating and Cold Weather

We can take heating complaints if the temperature inside the unit is below 67 F. Housing providers do not get to choose a date to turn the heat on or off. 67 F must be maintained at all times.
Fair Waiting Times
Before you call us, contact your housing provider. Please wait for them to resolve the issue in a timely manner.
The temperature outside affects the amount of time that’s reasonable for a repair. Below is a quick guide.
Outside Temperature | Timeline for resolution |
---|---|
Lows in the 60s | One week |
Lows in the 40s | One day |
Below freezing | Immediate |
Space heaters
It is reasonable for the owner to provide these during an emergency repair. Space heaters are allowed for 72 hours, excluding weekends and holidays per MGO 30.04. Do not use electric space heaters near water.
Things to try
If your unit is cold, but the temperature is 67 F or higher, here are some things to check:
- Windows
- Are they fully and properly closed? Are they locked?
- If you have single pane windows, are your storm windows closed and in place?
- Heat sources
- Are your vents open?
- Are your heat sources blocked or covered in any way?
- Air Flow
- Are you opening your curtains during the day and closing them at night? This action traps heat.
- Can you use draft stoppers if exterior doors are a bit drafty?
- Are your interior doors open? This allows heat to move through all rooms.
If you have excessively drafty doors or windows, please talk to your housing provider. If they do not address the issue, you could file a complaint.
