We aim to improve the health, safety, and wellness of Madison. Abandoned homes in foreclosure need care too! Register these properties so we know who to contact when there's a problem. Upkeep reduces blight and maintains property values.

Before you register

As the financial institution taking the house back, you must

  • Inspect the property
  • Ensure it is abandoned
  • Secure the property

Register

Fill out the form after you complete the steps above. Include a check with your application. The fee depends on the date you verified the property is vacant.

Mail your form and a check to:

  • City of Madison Building Inspection

    Madison, WI 53701

Address the check to City of Madison Treasurer.

Fees

  • If paid within 5 days of the vacancy inspection: $250
  • If paid 6 or more days after the inspection: $300

Maintenance

You must care for the property until the property is sold. This includes snow removal on public sidewalks, lawn care, and security of the building.
