Cottage Grove Road (I39 to Sprecher Rd)
Last Updated: 09/18/2020
The Contractor is currently installing the poles and wiring for the new traffic signals and street lighting, and most of the project has been prepared for the remaining asphalt paving work. The final layer of pavement will be installed over the course of several days during the week of Sept. 21. While paving, the contractor will flag traffic as necessary to safely perform the work. Once the paving is complete, the new pavment markings will be installed, and the contractor will complete any remaining restoration cleanup work.
Cottage Grove Rd. will remain open to a single lane of traffic in both directions until the project is complete. Two-way traffic will remain on the south side of Cottage Grove Rd. until the final paving is complete on north side, and westbound traffic will then be switched back to the north side of the median while the pavement markings are placed. Access to the businesses is primarily off of Gemini Dr. During the final paving, this access will need to be closed and traffic will the be redirected to North Star and McLean. The intersection of Cottage Grove Rd. and Sprecher will remain as an all-way stop until the new traffic signals are installed.
The City of Madison in conjunction with Dane County and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing to reconstruct portions of Cottage Grove Road within the City of Madison. The construction schedule for the project has been revised and the first phase of the project is now scheduled for construction in 2020. The first phase of the project includes reconstruction of Cottage Grove Road from the east side of I-39/90 to South Sprecher Road. The second phase of construction includes the reconstruction of Cottage Grove Road from South Thompson Drive to the east side of I-39/90 and will include the replacement of the Cottage Grove Road overpass of I-39/90. The construction year of the second phase of the project is not currently known but will coincide with the WisDOT’s replacement of the I-39/90 overpass.
The proposed project will reconstruct Cottage Grove Road to a four lane, urban boulevard section. The proposed street layout will include two through lanes and on-street buffered bike lanes in each direction, with a raised center median and left turn lanes at intersections. The reconstruction of the street will include the replacement of the pavement, base material, curb and gutter and drive aprons. Sidewalk will be added where it currently does not exist. The proposed project will also include construction of water main and storm sewer as well as improvements to the street lighting and traffic signal systems.
