Project Information

Project Overview

This is a Safe Streets Madison project to improve traffic signal visibility and clarify the driver right-of-way at the intersections of Wisconsin/Gorham and Wisconsin/Johnson. Both intersections are high-crash locations due to issues with signal visibility and driver confusion.  This project addresses those issues.

Project Limits

Example: Monona Dr to Stoughton Rd

Project Schedule

Work will take place in two phases.  The first phase will involve removing and rebuilding the center concrete islands on Wisconsin Avenue.  This work will be done while maintaining traffic.

The second phase will be installing the new traffic signal infrastructure.  Concrete island work will take place in June.  Traffic signal work will take place over a single weekend in late July.  During this weekend, the traffic signals will need to be turned off and the Wisconsin/Gorham and Wisconsin/Johnson intersections will have stop signs.  Wisconsin Avenue will be closed to thru traffic on the block between Gorham Street and Johnson Street.

Public Involvement

This project was prioritized and approved through the City’s “Safe Streets Madison” program.  Potential projects are ranked through a scoring system and prioritized based on the “benefit/cost” score.  Final project approval takes place at a Transportation Commission meeting.  Detailed information about the Safe Streets Madison program is located on the program’s webpage.
