Improving Physical and Mental Health at the Madison Senior Center

Every day, the Madison Senior Center strives to provide opportunities for Madison's older adults to come together, make connections, and get access to education and services they may not otherwise be able to get.

Those connections are crucial as study after study shows social isolation is a major issue facing America's older adults. Isolation and loneliness are more than just a feeling – they have real, tangible effects on health that are especially impactful on older populations.

The Madison Senior Center's programs aim to address that need while providing an inclusive space to socialize, get involved in a wide range of activities, and be themselves.

What's nice about this place is that the members can be flawed, but they have a safe place they can come to where they can put their trust in, relax, and be their real selves. It feels really good to be a part of a place where you know you won't be harmed further.

Look Good, Feel Good

The Madison Senior Center is always looking to add programs that benefit its members, and a new program is already making a big impact.

Earlier this year, the Senior Center began working with the Chanell Ardor Schools of Beauty and Culture, Madison's first Black-owned cosmetology school, to provide free haircuts and beard trims on-site at the Madison Senior Center. The new program came about after a social work intern at the Senior Center read studies about how older adults sometimes do not want to go out and socialize due to dwindling self-esteem, contributing to those feelings of isolation and loneliness. Additionally, things like hair cuts may be hard for some older adults to afford on limited or fixed incomes, and they can be hard to get to if transportation options are limited.

Members who attended one of the early sessions say being able to get their hair cut for free at a place they already know, are comfortable with, and can get to easily is a game-changer. The sessions held in the Senior Center's Craft Room – complete with salon chairs, lights and mirrors – adds to the Senior Center's wellness offerings and allow Chanell Ardor students to put in their necessary training hours while giving back to the community.

We believe beauty and self-care are deeply connected to confidence, dignity, and human connection. Partnering with the Madison Senior Center has allowed our students to use their skills in a meaningful way while giving back to the community. It has been an honor to provide services that not only help seniors look their best, but also create moments of conversation, care, and joy. The experience has been just as impactful for our students as it has been for the members we serve.

National Older Americans Month

May is National Older Americans Month, with the Administration for Community Living giving this year's celebration the theme of “Champion Your Health." The theme encourages seniors across the country to take a more active role in managing their health by advocating for themselves, getting preventive care, and making informed decisions that support their independence and wellbeing.

This new program at the Madison Senior Center is just the latest example of its mission to provide opportunities for older adults to engage in healthy living education and activities in an inclusive community. It also shows how managing your health can take many forms – including something as simple as a haircut – and how it can have a deeper impact on your mind, body and spirit.

Funding from the Community Development Division supports hundreds of programs from partners across the city, but this support is more than a line item on a budget. It has real-life, everyday impacts for Madisonians.

To highlight some of those significant impacts Community Development funding has on our community, we will be sharing stories every month on the Community Development Division's website
