Commercial Avenue Sanitary Sewer Reconstruction

Work on this project was completed in the spring/fall 2025. The new sanitary sewer along N Fair Oaks Avenue, the Commercial Avenue Service Roads and beneath Highway 30 was successfully installed. In addition, the northern Commercial Avenue Service Road was re-paved as part of this project due to the street’s condition both before and during construction. Future projects within the Hawthorne Neighborhood will aim to replace & upsize sanitary sewers wherever feasible.

We appreciate folks cooperation on this project, particularly during the Highway 30 exit ramp closure and during the median replacement on N Fair Oaks Avenue.

Weather permitting, work on this project is expected to get fully underway this week (week of January 27th, 2025). The contractor will begin by installing groundwater dewatering wells and excavating bore pits to facilitate the trenchless bore and jack sanitary sewer installation under Highway 30. The bore and jack operation is expected to take approximately 4-6 weeks to complete. During this time, there will be road closures for thru-traffic (local traffic only) on segments of Commercial Ave., Fairmont Ave., and Mayfair Ave. during working hours (7am – 7pm). In addition, the intersection of Commercial Ave. and Fairmont Ave. will be fully closed to all traffic during working hours. These areas are expected to re-open during non-working hours but residents are advised to avoid the area and take alternate routes through the neighborhood over these next few weeks. After the bore and jack operation is completed, the contractor will begin installing the remaining sanitary sewer on this project.

The construction limits of this project have officially been modified to relocate the bore and jack sewer construction approximately one block east (near Fairmont Ave.). The revised project limits reflect the ‘Alternative’ highway sewer crossing discussed during the 8/28/24 PIM. The ‘Project Location Map’ link on this webpage has been revised.

Design of the sanitary sewer is far along and coordination with entities outside of the City is underway (Town of Blooming Grove, WisDOT, etc.). Board of Public Works approval for this project was obtained on 7/10/2024. The project will go to Common Council on 8/6/2024. The City is working to schedule a Public Information Meeting sometime over the next few weeks for this project.
