Project Information

Project Overview

This public stormwater outlot is currently under developer agreements between the City of Madison and Veridian for the construction of the stormwater pond and greenway. The existing developer agreements require the establishment of native prairie vegetation prior to city acceptance for long-term maintenance. To fulfill these requirements, Veridian has hired Heartland Ecological Restoration to assess the existing vegetation. Heartland Ecological Restoration has determined that the native seeding did not establish, and the site is dominated primarily with highly invasive non-native species. These species will likely only be eradicated with a series of integrated pest management practices, which include two applications of ATV-mounted broadcast herbicide in combination with mowing, prescribed burning, hand pulling, spot mowing, and native seeding.

ATV-mounted broadcast herbicide application will occur on August 21st.

Heartland Ecological Restoration is staffed by trained ecologists who have experience in the appropriate application of herbicides for prairie establishment, are required to have Wisconsin certified pesticide applicator’s licenses, report the total amount of herbicide used to the city– which the city reports annually to public health. Heartland Ecological Restoration will monitor wind directions to control spray drift during their application.
