Transportation

Mission, Goals, and Objectives

The mission of the Department of Transportation is to develop and maintain a safe, efficient, economical, equitable, and sustainable transportation system for Madison's residents and visitors in a way that is consistent with the City's land use system and regional transportation goals.

The Department of Transportation is responsible for planning, development, coordination, operation, and regulation of the various elements of transportation systems for the City. These responsibilities include all-mode transportation planning, transit, parking and traffic engineering functions. Requests for readily available, standard information can be handled by contacting (in person or by telephone) the individuals listed below. In many instances, inquiries or requests can be handled more expeditiously through personal contact. For example, a request for street lights, traffic signal, stop signs or other traffic control installations can be initiated and/or answered through personal contact. Often answers are readily available since some requests are duplications of recent inquiries; and a written reply will be provided upon request.
