U Drive to One Drive Migration
The Plan
As part of the M365 project, city staff who are still using their U Drives to save their documents, will need to migrate their documents and files from their personal U Drives to their OneDrive or their department's SharePoint site.
By using OneDrive, you can collaborate on work and know that changes you make to your files are updated across all your devices and can be accessed via the web without having to VPN to access your documents.
I Don't Have a U Drive
If you were hired after December 23, 2023, you were not assigned a U Drive. You have been using your OneDrive to save your files.
The Timeline
The plan is to have all U Drives removed by December 31, 2026. We will be working with each department on a scheduled timeline making sure that all staff have migrated their U Drive's to their OneDrive.
Why is this Important?
Moving your files to OneDrive or SharePoint ensures they are backed up, secure, and accessible from any device. It also aligns with the city's long-term storage strategy and helps reduce reliance on aging file server infrastructure, and the continual filling of our F drive file servers.
What Can I Do?
If you haven't, start migrating your files that are currently located on your U Drive to your OneDrive account, or, when appropriate, into your department's SharePoint site. For guidance on where different types of files should be stored, review this article on "Where to Store Your Stuff, " such as documents, maps, photos, and videos.
How do I Migrate my Files?
- Open File Explorer and locate your U Drive
- Open a second instance of File Explorer and navigate to your OneDrive folder.
- Select the files or folders you want to move from your network drive.
- Drag and drop them into the OneDrive folder.
- Wait for the blue syncing arrows to become green check marks, indicating the upload is complete
