Meter Signs

Meter signs are used to reserve on-street metered parking spaces for approved temporary uses.

Typical Use

Meter Signs may be issued to:

Accommodate large moving trucks, storage containers, and other oversize vehicles.  Storage containers require a Street Occupancy Permit.

Facilitate construction or utility work on property and adjacent to the street

Prohibit parking for block parties, races, or parades

Accommodate funerals or weddings

  • City ordinance allows up to six meters, at no charge, for ceremonies
  • Receptions are not included in this accommodation

How to Request Meter Signs

  • Call the Parking Division at 608-266-4761
  • All requested locations are reviewed prior to approval

Meter Sign Timeframes

  • Full Day: 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Half Day:
    • 8:00 am – 1:00 pm or
    • 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Important:
If the parking space will be used both before and after 1:00 pm, a full-day reservation is required.

Fees

Parking space reservation:

  • $18.00 per full day, per meter
  • $10.00 per half day, per meter
  • No charge on Sundays
  • $2.00 per meter sign issued

Posting, Removal & Enforcement Requirements

  • Signs are placed on meters by the purchaser
  • Signs must be posted in advance of occupancy to be enforceable
  • Meter signs and zip ties must be removed immediately after use
  • All materials must be properly discarded or recycled
  • Additional fees may apply if signs are not removed or disposed of correctly

Idling Reminder

Vehicles may not idle for more than 5 minutes
(Madison General Ordinances 12.1291 & 28.141)
