West Washington Avenue Resurfacing
The approval process for obtaining the final permits for the project delayed the start date, and work on the City’s project will now begin on Monday, July 12. Construction is anticipated to be phased as follows:
Phases 1 & 2 - The contractor will complete utility work at the intersection of Bassett St and W. Washington Ave. Work within the intersection will be completed in halves in order to maintain two-way traffic on W. Washington Ave. Work will begin on the S. Bassett St. side of the intersection (S. Bassett will be closed at W. Washington Ave. during this time), and then work will progress to the N. Bassett side of the intersection (N. Bassett St. will be closed at W. Washington Ave.).
Phases 3 & 4 – Once the utility work is completed in the Bassett intersection, the work will be focused on W. Washington Ave while maintaining access through the intersections at Bedford St, Bassett St, and Broom St. During these phases, the 500 block of W. Washington Ave will be fully closed and the 400 block will be open to a single lane of traffic, moving westbound (outbound) only.
Metro buses will be detoured around the work zone, and some parking will be temporarily removed on the 500 block of W. Main St to accommodate the detoured metro busses and temporary boarding locations.
The purpose of this project is to resurface the street and replace utilities on West Washington Ave between Bedford Street and Broom Street. Proposed work includes removal and replacement of asphalt pavement, replacement of water main, sanitary sewer main and laterals, storm sewer and private storm sewer connections, installation of pedestrian street lighting, and replacement of curb and gutter, drive aprons, and sidewalk as needed. Crews will also install a protected intersection for pedestrians and bicyclists at the intersection of W Washington Avenue and Bassett Street. Crews will also install a parking protected bike lane on South Bassett Street between West Washington Avenue and West Main Street.
