Rental Property Emergency Contacts
All rental dwelling units must have a contact on file with Building Inspection. Having a contact on file helps protect your assets in an emergency.
In 2019, we revised the Rental Property Emergency Contact Registration (RPEC) process. Owners no longer need to do yearly renewals. Now, owners must make updates when there is a change in contact information. If the contact details are the same as last year, you do not need to contact us. The information must always be correct and current.
Register or Update Contact Info
You can register or update your property with this simple online form. You do not need an account, only your parcel number. You only need to register once per parcel number. Find the parcel number on the Property Lookup page. If you have trouble with the online form, call us at the number below.
Please note: The emergency contact details must be up-to-date at all times. Owners must make updates as soon as there is a change.
If there are no changes to the information, please disregard. If you recently sold the property, please disregard.
Not a rental?
We identify possible rentals by comparing the property address and the owner address. We flag properties when these addresses are different. We also flag addresses that have multiple units. To check what owner address we have on file, please visit the property lookup site.
If you rent out your property, you must provide RPEC information.
If any of the following is true, please let us know your property is not a rental
- The mailing address and site address do not match, but the dwelling is owner-occupied.
- The dwelling is a second home, and you do not rent it out.
- A co-owner lives on the property, and the other owner's mailing address is on file.
- You live in a duplex and occupy both sides, never renting.

To change your mailing address on the Assessor's website, please call 608-266-4531.
If the following is true, we recommend that you register:
- Your family lives on the property UNLESS they can make legal decisions in an emergency.
- The house is awaiting sale.
- You are remodeling the vacant house.
- You are not sure if you will be renting the house in the future.
In an emergency, it is helpful for us to know who to contact.
RPEC Background
Per MGO 27.04(2)(k), owners of rental properties must register an emergency contact's name and number. We use the information in time-sensitive situations.
Citations
If property owners fail to register their RPEC information, we will issue an Official Notice. The Notice will give owners 30 days to either register their property or let us know the property is not a rental. After that point, we will issue a citation amount of $691.00 through the Municipal Court. To avoid penalties, please register your property or let us know it is not a rental.
