Important Public Health Update

This message is to share confirmed information from Public Health Madison & Dane County (PHMDC) regarding a confirmed measles case that has impacted specific Metro routes.

Internal Response & Staff Privacy

Metro identified and contacted the employees known to be working during the exposure windows to connect them with PHMDC. However, if you believe you were present in the affected locations during the listed times and have not been contacted, please notify your Division Chief immediately so they can connect you with PHMDC.

As requested by PHMDC- and in the interest of community health- Metro has shared the specific routes, times, and locations that were identified for exposure. The complete list of exposure times and locations is available on the PHMDC website, located here: Case of Measles in Dane County

Additionally, I ask that you extend the utmost professional courtesy, discretion, and respect to your Metro co-workers always, but especially during situations such as this.

Coordination & Support

Metro Senior Leadership is communicating and coordinating with PHMDC, Teamsters Business Agent- Matt Sarenich, the Mayor’s office, and the City of Madison Human Resources Director. Please know that many people are working behind the scenes to ensure that you have the necessary support, resources, and factual information as it becomes available.

A Personal Note

I realize receiving this news days later is frustrating. In my 15 years working for the Municipality of Anchorage, regardless of my position or title, my biggest pet peeve was learning about work impacts from the local news or on social media before hearing it from my own leadership. I know exactly how that feels.

I want to ensure that this is not the practice or continues here at Metro. So, while we followed the PHMDC process and investigative timelines, worked to confirm routes and interlining, and took care of the city and Metro-related actions necessary, I recognize this message is coming to you later than I would like.

However, my commitment and goal remain the same to be accurate, forthcoming, transparent, and timely when communicating with Metro staff and City of Madison leadership.

Health & Attendance

For most staff, this message is precautionary, but please support your general well-being and practice good health awareness:

  • Check Your Status

Verify your vaccination records quickly on the Wisconsin Immunization Registry.

  • If You Are Sick

If you have symptoms (fever, cough, chills, etc.), please prioritize your health. And if you need to take your earned sick time to get healthy, please follow your division’s call-in procedure/process.

Please know, Metro Transit will continue to work with PHMDC, and I will share further updates as they become available.
