
1 Year Anniversary of BRT Launch
Metro Transit's Evolution
- In June 2023, as preparation for the launch of Bus Rapid Transit, Metro completed a comprehensive redesign.
- In September 2024, Metro's first Bus Rapid Transit route was launched (Route A). This runs 15 miles east to west through Madison's busiest travel corridor including the downtown area and campus.
- As part of the BRT launch, Metro added (62) 60-foot electric buses, designed to transport more passengers while reducing Metro's carbon footprint.
Several Elements of the BRT Launch
- New maintenance Facility on Hanson Rd: including a satellite maintenance and bus storage facility, fully equipped bus wash, utilities to support electric vehicles, additional training and conference room space, and a second dispatch and administrative area.
- BRT Charging: depot charging at maintenance facilities and pantograph chargers at Junction Rd, Hanson Rd, and Sun Prairie.
- Shelters/Stations: center lane boarding, full shelters, real-time signs, and fare kiosks.
- New Fare Equipment: online accounts, ability to board using a smartphone or credit card, and boarding at any door.
