As part of our ongoing efforts to be informative and share information, I will provide some monthly crime data on my blog.
MPD's dedicated Crime Analysts create this product. We use it to help to identify trends within and across districts, and to help focus resources on 'hot spots'.
Below are excerpts from the SEPTEMBER 2018 report:
Shots Fired:
In September of 2018 there were 2 shots-fired central
For the month of September there were 13 incidents city-wide
Year to date for the City there have been 144 shots fired--a 13.8% DECREASE over last year
Year to date 20 individuals have been struck by gunfire (not including accidents and self-inflicted).
Robberies:
There were 22 robberies city-wide in September (compared to 11 in September of 2017); Central District had 2 robberies in September of 2018
The five year city-wide average for September robberies is 19.4
42% of robberies took place between 9p-3am
Burglaries:
City-wide there were 111 burglaries in September compared to 79 burglaries in August of 2017, a 41% INCREASE
There were 17 burglaries central in September of 2018
***At least 67 burglaries took place while a resident was home***
***At least 71 burglaries involved an unlocked door***

Heroin Overdoses:
Overdoses attributed to opiates continue to be a major problem in Madison (and throughout the nation). The lethality of these drugs--thanks to incredibly potent synthetics--continues to increase.
In September of 2018, Central had 4 overdoses; in September of 2017 there were 2
CITY WIDE: In the month of September 2018, there were 15 known overdoses. In September of 2017 there were 21 OD's city-wide.
There have been 226 overdoses so far in 2018, compared to 163 in the first nine months of 2017. This is a 39% INCREASE.
FATALITIES: In September of 2018 there were 1suspected death from heroin--compared with 1 opioid related fatality in September of 2017. Year to date there have been 34 suspected heroin related deaths in Madison, compared to 16 last year at that time.
MARI: Patrol referred 4 people to the MARI program in September
MARI is the Madison Area Recovery Initiative, a program that MPD launched and for which MPD secured the grant funding. MPD works in partnership with a host of other agencies and stakeholders to use this alternative to traditional arrest.
Stranger Sexual Assaults (includes 1st, 2nd, and 4th degree):
City-wide, there were 7 assaults in September (there were 5 in September of 2017)
Central had 6 assaults in September of 2018.
Year to date there have been 38 stranger assaults city-wide, compared to 31at this time in 2017, an INCREASE OF 23%
