Complete Streets

Complete streets are safe, accessible, and welcoming for all—whether you're walking, biking, driving, or riding the bus. They help people of all ages and abilities get around and support healthier, more connected communities.
To support this vision, the Greater Madison MPO requires that all roadway projects funded through our Surface Transportation Block Grant-Urban program follow complete streets principles.
While we've followed this approach for years, changes to state law in 2015 made our old policy harder to interpret. We've now updated and clarified our policy to better guide local communities in designing projects that fit their unique needs while prioritizing safety, accessibility, and equity.
