Travel Modeling

The Greater Madison MPO’s regional travel demand model is used to project future traffic and is the basis for the determination of the need for new roadway capacity, transit service changes, and changes in land use policies and patterns. The travel model can also be used to determine the viability of roadway capacity reductions. The Greater Madison MPO’s regional travel demand model is multi-model, accounting for vehicle, bus, bike, and pedestrian travel.

The MPO’s travel model is used to forecast future travel based on forecasted employment and population growth and assumed changes to the roadway, transit system, and active transportation network, guiding the development of the MPO’s long-range transportation plan. The MPO also uses the travel model to generate traffic projections for area plans, local roadway corridors, and local roadway intersections.
