Place on File
If a previous motion fails and/or when no other actions are feasible, a committee may vote on the motion to PLACE ON FILE or PLACE ON FILE WITHOUT PREJUDICE. While both options result in the resolution or ordinance not passing, one option requires a delay before the file can be re-introduced, while the other allows for reintroduction at any time.
- PLACE ON FILE WITHOUT PREJUDICE: the item can be re-introduced at any time
- PLACE ON FILE: the item can’t be brought back for 60 days
The motion to place on file without prejudice offers the most flexibility, and for some committees may be the default choice for this very reason, when other options are not acceptable or feasible.
