Thank you from the South Police District! We have received numerous emails, calls, food items and more thanking the Officers for their hard work. Your support during strenuous times is felt and appreciated. The Officers have been incredible. The Officers continue to provide our community professional, educated, heartfelt police service during all things pandemic and protest. I am proud to be part of the Madison Police Department. We were talking about the various aspects of what is going on in the world. All of these Officers joined policing to help people and make a difference and they do not relinquish that trek in their career. During our discussion, continued pride for how we police was mentioned as we have other law enforcement agencies throughout the country consult on how we police. . . i.e. "look to problem solve instead of arrest our way out of problems", i.e. "building trust within the communty as a point of emphasis from day one". A few months ago UW Law professor Herman Goldstein passed away. Herman, the pioneer in so many policing initiatives that professionalized the police, educated the police and guided leaders. Herman through the years said the police take on too much. Too many of society's issues have been given to the police to "fix" or "address" when we are not trained in those capacities nor have the resources to complete. There are "think tanks" now describing what Herman suggested in various communities and perhaps our energies should be focused in this direction. We were fortunate to have Herman consult and help form the Madison Police Department during the 70's, 80's and 90's. Who is the next Herman to help law enforcement now and moving forward? As policing is viewed by many at the macro level, know that at the micro level WE all need to work on the simplest, easiest thing to perform: RESPECT. Respect each other. Respect our professions. Respect our values. Respect individuals. Respect our backgrounds. RESPECT. Captain Mike Hanson - Madison Police Department, South District
