This week a team of Officers worked a safety speed initiative on the Beltline at Fish Hatchery Rd. The officers made 35 stops and they estimate the average speed was 76 m.p.h. with the top speed clocked at 90 m.p.h. WOW!! We all drive the Beltine and see the dangerous driving behaviors every single day. We gasp when there is a senseless crash that kills someone. How about a little prevention, save the gasp and S-L-O-W down. Unscientifically, if you traverse 10 miles of the Beltline, from Stoughton Rd to Gammon Rd at 70 m.p.h. which is 15 m.p.h. above the speed limit, you are really only save about 2.5 minutes. However, you are breaking the law. Those 2.5 minutes could turn into 9 more minutes if stopped by an Officer. Those 2.5 minutes could include an expensive ticket. Those 2.5 minutes could result in a crash, serious injury or worse. Those 2.5 minutes could cause others to crash. Those 2.5 minutes just are not worth it. Please slow down and arrive alive. Captain Mike Hanson, South Police District
