City-Wide Notable Calls 07/01/2022 to 07/05/2022

The information provided below is about some of the calls officers responded to over the last twenty-four (24) hours. Most narratives represent early and preliminary information that was gathered from those in the field who were actively working the cases. In many instances, facts and circumstances, even the type of crime listed, can change as the investigation unfolds.

From 6:00 a.m. on 07/1/2022 through 6:00 a.m. on 07/5/2022, MPD received 1,874 calls for service. This number does not include parking complaints or 911 misdials. A breakdown of the calls for service per district is as follows: Central (359), East (362), Midtown (247), North (355), South (159), West (289), and Other (135). "Other" is used for calls that either do not have a sector or the sector is not in the City. This would be used in the case of one of our officers assisting another law enforcement agency.

Priority calls only from 5:11 - 7:24 p.m. due to calls for service.

CENTRAL: Sexual Assault – 12:30 a.m. Officers took a report of a possible sexual assault. Investigation ongoing.

SOUTH: Stolen Auto – 7:07 am.  The victim reported her vehicle was stolen from Zimbrick where she left it to be repaired.  The vehicle was entered as stolen and an ATL was aired.

MIDTOWN: Residential Burglary – 9:57 am.  Officers responded to a residence where the victim reported the suspect (29-year-old male) entered and stole clothing, household items, and cash.  Officers developed probable cause to arrest the suspect for burglary and bail jumping.  Suspect is at large.

MIDTOWN:  Physical Abuse of a Child – 9:38 p.m. Officers responded to a home where an adult woman and child were involved in a physical fight. Investigation ongoing. 

NORTH: Assist EMS – 9:55 p.m. Officers called to a residence after a woman was found unconscious. Woman transported to local hospital.

NORTH: Assist EMS – 10:59 p.m. Officers dispatched to a home where a toddler was choking. Officers first on scene and provide medical assistance until EMS arrived. Toddler taken to the hospital.

Priority calls only from 1:07 – 3:20 p.m. due to calls for service.
MIDTOWN: Check Person – 12:01 a.m.  Officers responded to a check person at a local clinic. Woman attempts to get officers to use force against her. Woman is suicidal. Transported to another hospital for help.

CENTRAL: – 12:04 a.m. Officers noticed a gun on the floorboard of a car. A K-9 team responded with a positive alert on the car. The loaded gun, marijuana and other drug paraphernalia were found inside.

EAST: Weapons Offense – 12:14 a.m. An off duty DNR agent called to report a shooting between vehicles. Casings discovered at the scene. Other law enforcement agencies involved in a pursuit with suspect vehicle. MPD officers used spikes, which were successful in stopping the vehicle. Five people arrested, including three juveniles. Multiple guns recovered. Vehicle involved reported stolen. 

WEST: Missing Juvenile/Runaway – 1:06 a.m. A 13-year-old girl was reported missing by her family. Last seen at a family member's house. Attempt to locate. No medical needs or other concerns. Teen returned home after police were notified. 

CENTRAL: Battery – 1:10 a.m. Man became physical with the bouncer of a bar after being denied entry. 28-year-old male suspect became combative when police tried to take him into custody. Another man attempted to insert himself into the situation. Two officers suffered minor injuries. Suspect also made threats to officers while at the hospital. Investigation ongoing. 

NORTH: Accident with Injuries – 2:19 a.m. Man driving at a high rate of speed before crash. Vehicle jumps car, rolls multiple times and hits a pole. 34-year-old driver was extricated from the vehicle. Driver charged with 2nd-offense OWI. 

NORTH: Weapons Offense – 5:59 a.m. Officers called after a woman threatened a man with a knife while intoxicated. Woman returned to the residence and took a vehicle without permission. Vehicle listed as stolen. It was eventually recovered after a crash at a park. Female suspect still at large. Probable cause to arrest her for domestic disorderly conduct while armed, operating a motor vehicle without an owner's consent and hit and run. Investigation ongoing. 

EAST: Death Investigation – 7:37 a.m. Officers dispatched to an assisted living facility after staff located a man deceased. Nothing suspicious. 

CENTRAL: Disturbance – 10:16 a.m. Man entered a vendor's tent who was working the Farmer's Market. Man became upset when asked to leave and threw a glass bottle on the pavement. Man taken into custody a short while later for disorderly conduct and eight counts of bail jumping.

SOUTH: Disturbance – 12:16 p.m. Officers dispatched to a home after residents find a woman inside. Woman follows residents around the home and punches a responding officer in the face. Suspect transported to hospital. 

WEST: OMVWI Arrest/Intoxicated Driver – 1:49 p.m. Officers respond to a report of an unresponsive male located underneath a motorcycle outside a department store. Keys found in the ignition of motorcycle and bike was left on. Narcan distributed. 34-year-old male arrested for 5th-offense OWI and possessing drug paraphernalia. 

MIDTOWN: Death Investigation – 3:02 p.m. Officers respond to a home after a woman is found cold to touch on a bedroom floor. Toxicology tests will be done.

CENTRAL: Trespass – 5:18 p.m. Stranger walked into a home without the consent of residents. Man was asked to leave multiple times. 75-year-old male suspect threatened law enforcement officers upon their arrival. Arrest for criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct and threats to law enforcement.

CENTRAL: PNB/AED Response – 6:49 p.m. Man is out to dinner with family when he begins to choke. Madison police attempt life-saving measures and are able to remove the obstruction from the man's throat. EMS arrives and transports the man to a hospital. 

NORTH: Domestic Disturbance – 8:39 p.m. Suspect arrested for damaging an apartment door and threatening another man with a steak knife. Suspect upset that someone was over at the apartment. Arrested for domestic disorderly conduct while armed and domestic damage to property.

SOUTH: Weapons Offense – 8:44 p.m. Man shows roommate a bullet hole in their apartment ceiling. Nobody home in the unit above his, but property damage is found. Officers removed five guns from the man's apartment.

EAST: Juvenile Arrest – 10:14 p.m. Juvenile staying at a Dane County juvenile shelter became upset when told he needed to go to bed. 12-year-old male began threatening staff and began removing screens from windows at the facility. Juvenile also damaged a door. He was taken to the Juvenile Reception Center for disorderly conduct and damage to property.

Priority calls only from 10:48 – 11:37 p.m. due to calls for service.

CENTRAL: OMVWI Arrest/Intoxicated Driver – 3:38 a.m. A woman is found passed out behind the wheel of her car at a traffic light. Woman sees police and starts to drive away, heading the wrong way down the street. Woman almost hit two parked cars. Woman eventually stops and is ordered out of the car. Arrested for OWI. Investigation ongoing.

CENTRAL: Disturbance – 2:20 a.m. Woman became upset and broke a screen-door window in an attempt to get inside an apartment. She was gone when officers arrived. Probable cause to arrest her for criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct.

CENTRAL: Death Investigation – 5:48 a.m. Officers dispatched to a home for reports of a deceased woman. Drug paraphernalia and suspect drugs located. Autopsy scheduled. 

NORTH: Assist EMS/Fire – 9:19 a.m. Officers called to a home for a man experiencing a medical emergency. MFD transported man to local hospital. 

NORTH: Domestic Disturbance – 12:01 p.m. Man gets physical with a woman during a fight at a park. Woman is able to get away and run to a nearby house to call police. Probable cause developed to arrest man for domestic disorderly conduct, domestic battery and felony bail jumping.

SOUTH: Domestic Disturbance – 12:02 p.m. Man and woman are involved in a physical altercation. Police respond. Man arrested for domestic disorderly conduct. 

NORTH: Drug Incident/Investigation – 12:08 p.m. Officers dispatched to a man slumping while at a restaurant. Warrant exists for man. Man has drugs and drug paraphernalia on him. Arrested on warrant and possession with an intent to  deliver drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

MIDTOWN: Theft – 2:17 p.m. Woman's purse is stolen as she is waiting in the common area of her apartment complex. Officers locate the 22-year-old female suspect and recover the purse. Suspect arrested for theft.  

CENTRAL: Domestic Disturbance – 2:32 p.m. A man and woman being to argue while at a park. Woman takes man's phone. Man pushes woman down in an attempt to take back his phone. Probable cause to arrest man for domestic disorderly conduct and bail jumping. 

WEST: Domestic Disturbance  –  4:37 p.m. Officers arrive to a home to find two women involved in a disturbance. 44-year-old female suspect strikes other woman in the face. Arrested for domestic disorderly conduct and domestic battery.

WEST: Traffic Incident – 4:48 p.m. Driver strikes the passenger side of a squad car, leaving her vehicle's bumper behind. No injuries to officer driving the squad. Officers locate woman at home. She is taken to the hospital for a med clear before she was cited and released. 

WEST: Domestic Disturbance – 5:25 p.m. Officers called in response to an intoxicated male yelling a woman and children while breaking items inside a home. Man taken to the Dane County Jail for domestic disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property and bail jumping.

NORTH: Dug Incident/Investigation – 5:36 p.m. Officers observe a UHaul pickup truck swerving on the road and makes a traffic stop. Driver has a revoked license.  Drugs located inside the vehicle. 33-year-old male arrested for possessing a narcotic and felony bail jumping. 42-year-old female passenger arrested for possessing methamphetamine and felony bail jumping

EAST: Violation of Court Order – 5:54 p.m. Woman taken into custody for violating a temporary restraining order. 

CENTRAL: Stolen Auto – 7:08 p.m. Officers investigating after a man reported his vehicle stolen.  Investigation continues.

NORTH: Domestic Disturbance – 8:18 p.m. Police dispatched after a man refuses to leave the property. Man became upset with woman inside the home. Man uncooperative when police arrive. He is arrested for domestic disorderly conduct, resisting and several bail jumping violations.

EAST: Domestic Disturbance – 9:53 p.m. Man and woman are fighting when the woman is punched in the face. Woman was uncooperative with officers on the scene and taken to the Dane County Jail on a city ordinance of resisting. Probable cause developed for man for domestic battery and domestic disorderly conduct.

NORTH: PNB/AED Response – 10 p.m. Officers called to a home where a man is having a medical emergency. Man transported to the hospital and pronounced dead. Nothing suspicious located.

SOUTH: Accident Private Property – 10:31 p.m.   Metro scraped against an MPD squad car. Very minor damage and no injuries reported. 

NORTH: Check Person – 10:44 p.m. Officers receive a call about a man who is armed and may be suicidal. Officers respond to his home.

Priority calls only from 5:19 – 5:30 p.m. due to calls for service.

NORTH: Disturbance – 12:35 a.m. Woman calls police after a man she knows kicked open her apartment door. The man did not enter the unit. Probable cause developed to arrest him for disorderly conduct and damage to property. 

CENTRAL: Domestic Disturbance – 2:48 a.m. Man pushes woman to the ground during a walk home. Witnesses see this and call police. Suspect charged with domestic battery and domestic disorderly conduct. 

CENTRAL: Domestic Disturbance – 3:52 a.m. Woman calls police to report threatening messages from the 22-year-old suspect. Probable cause developed to arrest the man for domestic disorderly conduct. Investigation ongoing.

EAST: Trespass – 8:22 a.m. Officers dispatched after a woman repeatedly entered a restricted area of a store. Suspect resists arrest when officers arrive. She is arrested for resisting and given a city ordinance for trespassing. 

CENTRAL: Check Person – 8:49 a.m. Dane County deputy located a subject asleep behind the wheel at an intersection. Driver tried to run away when MPD officer got to the scene. Arrested for outstanding warrants and resisting.

WEST: Domestic Disturbance – 10:41 a.m. Man begins kicking apartment door. Man grabs a glass bottle when he notices police on scene. Man arrested for domestic criminal damage to property, resisting and bail jumping.

CENTRAL: Battery – 2:23 p.m. Officers investigating a battery that occurred at the Juvenile Reception Center. Officers have arrested the suspect multiple times over the past month at the JRC. 15-year-old male was recently deemed an adjudicated delinquent and taken to the Dane County Jail.

WEST: Missing Adult – 4:52 p.m. Resident of a group home ran away from a caregiver and into a nearby vehicle. No dangerous behaviors noted at this time. Journey Mental Health notified. Woman has since returned home and is no longer considered missing.

MIDTOWN: Strategic Plan – 5:00 p.m. As part of the strategic plan, an officer was monitoring traffic on the Beltline. Officer observes a car going 102 mph in a 55 mph zone. Driver speeds off, nearly striking another car when officer attempts to make a stop. Officers do not pursue. Vehicle located unoccupied later in the day.

CITY-WIDE: Assist Police – 5:00 p.m. FBI contacted local law enforcement agencies regarding the suspect in the Highland Park parade shooting. FBI arrested suspect in Illinois. 

CENTRAL: Sexual Assault – 5:00 p.m. Officers notified of a sexual assault that took place last month. Investigation is ongoing.

NORTH: Weapons Offense – 6:15 p.m. Man reported having a gun waved at him by another man. Victim believed the man was upset with him for not using a turn signal. Victim states suspect had a child in his vehicle at the time. Officers located the suspect at home and find a loaded gun and several open intoxicants inside his vehicle. Suspect arrested for 2nd-offense OWI, 2nd-degree reckless endangering, intoxicated while possessing a firearm, disorderly conduct while armed, 2nd-offense OWI with underage passenger and was cited for open intoxicants.

CENTRAL: Domestic Disturbance –8:19 p.m. Police called after a man attacked another man during a custody exchange. Man arrested for disorderly conduct, battery and domestic disorderly conduct.

MIDTOWN: Weapons Offense – 10:39 p.m. Police called to a fast food restaurant parking lot in regards to a man attacking people with a pole. Man arrested for battery, disorderly conduct while armed, felony bail jumping, physical abuse to a child and resisting arrest. 

EAST: Domestic Disturbance – 10:10 p.m. Police called after a woman slammed a door on a man, causing a minor injury. Woman arrested on domestic charges.

CENTRAL: Domestic Disturbance – 3:11  a.m. Caller reported hearing a loud argument in the basement of their apartment building. Man arrested for domestic disorderly conduct and bail jumping

SOUTH: Stolen Auto – 3:40 a.m. Fitchburg police watched two teens leave a vehicle after they hit a parked car. MPD makes contact with vehicle owner, who reports it was stolen.
