The information provided below about some of the calls officers responded to is derived from notes provided by MPD Officers-In-Charge (OIC) at the end of their shifts. Most narratives represent early and preliminary information that was gathered by an OIC from those in the field who were actively working cases. The OIC is sharing what they were being told, in the moment. In many instances, facts and circumstances, even the type of crime listed, can change as officers, detectives and investigators continue their work.

From 6:00 a.m. on 02/04/2020 through 6:00 a.m. on 02/05/2020, MPD received 414 calls for service.  This number does not include parking complaints or 911 misdials.  A breakdown of the calls for service per district is as follows: Central (69), East (67), Midtown (71), North (53), South (50), West (60), and Other (44).  "Other" is used for calls that either do not have a sector or the sector is not in the City.  This would be used in the case of one of our officers assisting another law enforcement agency.

CENTRAL: Crash Investigation – 9:00 a.m. Officers responded to a central district business to a report of a vehicle that crashed into the glass doors of the building.  The suspect (34 year-old female) vehicle owner stated that she was outside of the vehicle, reached inside to turn the vehicle off and then the vehicle began to roll.  The suspect was cited for multiple vehicle offenses.

CENTRAL: Death Investigation – 1:48 p.m. Officers responded to a central district hotel reference a deceased subject.  The decedent was from out of state.  Investigation continuing.

SOUTH: Domestic Disturbance – 12:58 p.m. Officers responded to a south district residence reference a domestic disturbance.  The victim reported that the suspect (20 year-old male) threatened to harm himself and the victim with a knife during a verbal fight.  The suspect also physically assaulted the victim two days prior.  The suspect was arrested for domestic disorderly conduct while armed and domestic battery. He was transported to the Dane County Jail.

SOUTH: Check Person – 2:19 p.m. Officers responded to a south district residence reference a subject displaying erratic behavior.  The subject had been evaluated at a local hospital earlier in the day but was sent home.  When officers responded this time, the subject threatened to harm himself.  Officers also observed drugs in the subject's room.  The subject was conveyed to a local hospital to voluntarily admit to the psychiatric unit.

SOUTH: Sexual Assault – 2:32 p.m. Officers responded to the rape crisis center to speak with a victim who reported a sexual assault which occurred in December 2019.  The victim reported knowing who the suspect was, as they had attended a party together on the night of the sexual assault. Investigation continuing.

MIDTOWN: Check Person – 3:54 p.m. Officers were contacted by Journey Mental Health regarding a subject who told staff that he wanted to die.  Officers responded to the subject's residence to discover that they were home and admitted to taking a double dose of a prescription drug.  The subject was conveyed to a local hospital for evaluation.  Investigation continuing.

CENTRAL: Domestic Disturbance – 9:01 p.m. Officers responded to a central district residence reference a domestic disturbance.  The victim's neighbor had contacted police because the victim asked for help from the neighbor.  The victim had visible injuries from the physical altercation.  The suspect (46 year-old male) was arrested for domestic battery, strangulation, false imprisonment and conveyed to the Dane County Jail.

EAST: Missing Adult – 9:11 p.m. Officers responded to an east district group home reference a subject who had left earlier this morning because they were upset.  The subject has a history of running away but typically returns in the evening.  Today, however, the subject had not returned and thus, officers were called.  The runaway subject's brother located the runaway and a safety plan was established.
