Hispanic Heritage Month September 15-October 15, 2014

September 19, 2014 8:46 AM

Each year, the United States honors the contributions that Latinos have made to the nation with a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration that runs from September 15 through October 15.  This period is a time to celebrate the heritage and culture of our Hispanic and Latino Community.

The Madison Police Department is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.  We are fortunate to have a vibrant Latino community that has a strong emphasis on family, faith, hard work and service adding to the richness in diversity of our great city.

Last year the Madison Police Department Amigos en Azul program was honored as the Community Institution of the Year by WLMV - La Movida 1480AM and Mid-West Family Broadcasting, in collaboration with the Latino Chamber of Commerce of Dane County and Centro Hispano of Dane County in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.  We were honored to receive such recognition from organizations that give so much to our community.

Recently Chief Koval, along with other members of our Department, spent time celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with our community by attending the Viva Mexico Celebration held at Warner Park where we were greeted by families and children, enjoying the traditional sounds of music and the delicious food from their native country.  Our Department participated in La Movida's Viva Mexico celebration, assisting with a Caravan that began at the Villager Mall on Park St. and ended at Angel Park in Sun Prairie.  We enjoyed watching families decorate their vehicles with vibrant colors with pride to share their culture with our community.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, the Madison Police Department reflects on the contributions made by our Latino community through leadership, entrepreneurship, economy and most importantly providing a great sense of community.  We value the partnerships we have developed over the years and serving our Latino community.  Please join us in learning and celebrating the generations of Hispanic and Latino Americans that have influenced and enriched our community.
